Negotiations: Negotiating Against Yourself - The Bare Bottom Truth

Truth can be bitch. The beating up on oneself. I promise I will never say that again. I sure won’t do that again. I will learn from my mistakes. Negotiating is a skill that takes practice. Frankly I can be pretty off the cuff. But when real negotiations take place I try to have that ‘Tom” negotiator alter ego step forward.
Learning From our Mistakes - Negotiating Against Yourself - Here we look at a basic negotiation where one actually enters into a situation where one does not even know a negotiation will take place, blindsided, hence completely unprepared.
I have selected two short videos (I think the negotiator actually resembles me) which aptly demonstrate both sides ‘Negotiating Against Yourself’ and ‘The Bare Bottom Truth’. Sometimes hours of research pays off.
In summary don’t beat yourself up. It’s not productive. If blindsided, realize you are in a negotiation and act appropriately. If this happens find a way to take a short break. Hold your ground and always consider, do I have to give anything up? I will set your mind straight, often the Soviet Negotiator is all bluff.
As a side note - On TV when real business negotiations take place they have a clearly defined time or place. This formalizes the negotiation which sets the stage for fair and premeditated exchange.
Successful negotiations! Tom
